House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas has been an 803 page book that I have been avoiding for quite awhile. In the first place, it was the massive hype on Bookstagram, Goodreads and any book related place you can think of. In all honesty, at the time, the plot didn’t interest me. Aka the mood reader. Heck, I still haven’t finished the A Court of Thorn and Roses series yet! Why start another Sarah J Maas series? Well I did and I don’t regret it.
Well through an amazing friend on Bookstagram, I did a buddy read and I am super glad I did. There was a lot going on for me in the month of May and June so it took me awhile to read this book. But, it was worth it, and it left me in a massive book hangover afterwards.

To begin with, I will start off by saying that I was extremely entertained by House of Earth and Blood. I enjoyed the characters of Bryce and Hunt. You get to see them unfold as characters with one another as they work together to solve a mystery. The mystery keeps you turning the page as you learn more about the world of Crescent City and the characters that are in it.
In particular, this is a book that I felt like I can’t tell much about without giving things away. It is one of those books you have to see or read for yourself to see what happens in the story.
Undoubtedly, I will have to say that this story kept me on my toes. Who did it and why. Once you think you figured it out, then the story changes and you are caught up in a whirlwind of a different possibility. I noticed in this book that throughout the 600 pages of the 803 that Sarah J Maas would deliberately lead you one way but then suddenly take a different direction. So the shock factor of who did it has a very theatrical ending.
There are three points that I would say made House of Earth and Blood not 100% stellar for me. While reading the reviews as well, a lot of people agree with the same thing.
In the first place, the information download of this world when you first start this book is intense. There is a heck of a lot of world building in this book that can have your head spinning. There are so many mythical creatures, politics of this world, the history that was created that had so much going on that you can get lost and want to drop the book. So if anyone has struggled through it before, keep pushing. It gets better. At least for me it did. Because personally it felt it got easier to understand as you go through the book because of the art of storytelling that Sarah J Maas has created.
Secondly, this book was extremely drawn out and I felt that a lot of the most exciting things that happened in the story were at the beginning and the last 200ish pages of the book. On the contrary, this book wasn’t boring at all. Sarah J Maas has her way of keeping the reader engaged. But could it have been shorter? Yes. Is it still good? Absolutely! Will I eventually do a reread? Most likely.
Lastly, there are some things that you find out throughout the story are sometimes a little left field. Even though you are in the main characters Bryce and Hunt’s POV, you still don’t get a clue that the characters were hiding several particular secrets from you and other people. Yet when it is revealed at the end, you are a little flabbergasted. Simply because you are wondering where in the heck in the story did this happen? Yet in a way it is still connected well and flows nicely in the end which made it a terrific ending. To that end, maybe one day I will reread House of Earth and Blood and see the clues in the story that I missed on the first time I read this book.
To summarize, House of Earth and Blood this is a book worth trying to get through if you are a A Court of Thorn and Roses fan. I am truly curious about book two of the series, House of Sky and Breath. With the ending of book 1, Sarah J Maas could have ended it right there with how epic of an ending it was. But of course, why stop at one massive book? I am looking forward to it.
