My Rating:
This book is super popular among many readers that I have seen it on Instagram, Facebook and other social media where you get book recommendations from. Though I kind of knew what I was getting into when I checked it from my digital library, I wasn’t expecting Tessa Bailey to deliver it the way she did.
I did decide to read this book on audio and against popular opinion, I didn’t really care for this book. It is not my cup of tea but it can be yours.
The smut and dirty talk seem to engulf this book to the point that I felt like it was more about that than the actual story line and our main characters. Ironically, without fail I would turn this on in my car. I would get to the smut scene and I felt like the whole world could hear what I was listening to. I was told that people can hear the music so I can imagine people hear the smut as well when I stopped at lights. I personally don’t mind a scene and some dirty talk. But this is a little on the heavy side of smut that I personally don’t care for.
So if that is your thing, then It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey is your go to book.
Our main character is Piper who is a rich party girl social media influencer who landed herself in trouble once again. The sort of trouble where she thought she would be bailed out again with no consequences. But this time her luck runs out. Her step dad had enough because she is in her late 20’s, still partying and still has no future for herself.
So he sent Piper and her sister, who volunteered, to Westport, Washington, a vastly different place than Hollywood. She has avoided the place most of her life because that was the sea town that her late father died in while at sea. She didn’t want to deal with the emotions again of losing her father.
She quickly learns that she is not cut out for this town and set to finding a way out quickly. Her biological father left her the bar so she decided that if she fixes it up then her step dad would think she is now responsible and would let her come home.
In the process she meets Brendon, who is a gruff bearded sea captain with a judgemental attitude and a past to follow. Brendon learns not to judge people on the outside and decides to help Piper and her sister in rebuilding the bar.
Before you know it, they start falling for each other.
Piper starts to learn who she really is away from the social media spotlight and starts to learn that she is truly capable of doing great things. Brendon starts to deal with his past as well so he can pursue Piper with his whole heart.
At the heart of it, It Happened One Summer has a good change of pace that you don’t read very often. The ending was kind of lame but it was still good regardless. I will personally not be reading the 2nd book of the Bellinger Series but like I said. If you like the smut, I would recommend picking up both books.
